What is ESOS?
ESOS is a UK government initiative aimed at helping large businesses improve energy efficiency, cut costs, and support climate goals. It requires qualifying companies to conduct energy assessments every four years.
Who Must Comply?
ESOS applies to UK organisations with 250+ employees or those with an annual turnover over £44 million and a balance sheet above £38 million. Non-compliance can lead to hefty fines.
What Does ESOS Involve?
– Energy Audits: Businesses must conduct detailed energy audits covering buildings, processes, and transport to find cost-effective energy-saving measures. These audits must be overseen by a certified Lead Assessor.
– Reporting: Findings are compiled into an ESOS report, signed by a director, and submitted to the Environment Agency.
– Compliance Notification: Businesses must notify the Environment Agency of their compliance.
Benefits of ESOS
By identifying energy-saving opportunities, businesses can reduce costs and lower carbon emissions, boosting sustainability and reputation.
Deadlines
ESOS operates in four-year cycles. Your organisation qualifies for the third compliance period (ESOS phase 3) if, on 31 December 2022, it met the ESOS definition of a large undertaking. Early preparation is key.
Why ESOS Matters
ESOS helps businesses manage energy use efficiently, ensuring compliance with regulations while enhancing financial and environmental performance.
